What do real estate agents have to do with climate protection and youth?
A select group of Sonoma County real estate agents, the Cool Agents Alliance, are partnering with youth in Sonoma County’s high schools. Through this innovative program, agents help the schools save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and engage students in meaningful education and service. The Cool Agents Alliance offers buyers and sellers the opportunity to work with caring professionals who share our community goals and support our community programs.
The Climate Protection Campaign developed this model business program wherein real estate agents grow their business and give to the community. Real Estate agents in the Cool Agents Alliance receive recognition and visibility to help them market their services, and they simultaneously support the great efforts of students and schools participating in Cool Schools.
Thanks to the Climate Protection Campaign, Sonoma County is the first in the nation to have all of its nine cities and the county commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change. In May 2005, a committee of community members came to agreement that Sonoma County should reduce its emissions 25% below 1990 levels by 2015, the boldest emission reduction target set by any community in the United States to date. All nine Sonoma County city governments and the county board of supervisors have adopted the recommended community target, and now our county is moving forward on a comprehensive plan to achieve our goal.
In the next 10 years our community has the opportunity to strategically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but what about the 50 years after that? Today's youth have a unique opportunity to be part of the solutions to global climate change. Cool Schools, the companion project of the Cool Agents Alliance, connects youth and schools with Sonoma County's initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Cool Schools offers educational resources and solution-based activities to schools in Sonoma County. Learning takes place at school and in the community, and the student's actions help our community meet its climate protection goals. Projects include students giving presentations to local city councils, performing energy audits of their schools, and planting trees to offset greenhouse gas emissions. In the process, students develop the life skills and leadership skills that help this community and others improve their relationship with the planet.
